UW Women's Doubles Teams Advance to Quarterfinals
April 26, 2002
OJAI, Calif. - Washington women's tennis players Andrea Coulter and Dea Sumantri advanced to the semifinals of the invitational draw while both of the Huskies' doubles teams reached the quarterfinals of the championship bracket Friday during the rain-delayed second day of the Pac-10 championships at the Ojai Valley Tennis Club.
The championships were on hold for six hours due to heavy rains that forced several matches to be postponed until Saturday. One the showers subsided, the two remaining UW singles competitors made short work of their opposition. Washington had four entries in the women's championship bracket, all of which were eliminated on Thursday.
Coulter and Sumantri, who each had first-round byes and second-round victories Thursday, posted straight set quarterfinal wins over foes from Arizona State. Coulter beat Megan Yeats 6-2, 6-2 and Sumantri defeated Lauren Colalillo by a 6-0, 6-2 count. Coulter meets California's Nicole Havlicek on Saturday in one semifinal and Sumantri battles Tiffany Brymer from USC in the other.
The doubles competition began Friday and saw Washington's 25th-ranked duo of Claire Carter and Darija Klaic post an 8-5 decision over Washington State's top tandem of Stacy McKenna and Erica Perkins who are ranked 11th nationally.
Sumantri teamed with Colleen Gray to outlast USC's Maureen Diaz and Anita Loyola by a 9-8 score in the round of 16.
The Pac-10 championships continue through Sunday.
