No. 16 Softball Falls To No. 2 Arizona, 7-0
April 27, 2002
TUCSON, Ariz. - No. 2 ranked University of Arizona used six runs in the fifth inning to pull away and knock off No. 16 Oregon State, 7-0, in Saturday night's Pac-10 softball action.
The Wildcats (43-7; 10-3 Pac-10) jumped in front early, scoring a run on two hits in the opening inning. Lovieanne Jung led-off the frame with a double and Courtney Fossatti followed with an infield single to put a pair of runners on base. OSU's (35-17; 6-8 Pac-10) Jenni Jodoin fielded a grounder by UA cleanup hitter Leneah Manuma and attempted to get Jung at the plate but the ball popped loose allowing the run to score.
Oregon State pitcher Kristen Hunter settled in after the rough first inning and threw well over the next three innings, allowing just one hit and striking out four, but Arizona broke the game open in the fifth inning.
The Wildcats batted through the order, pounding five hits, capped off by a grand slam home run over the left field fence by pitcher Jennie Finch.
'Kristen Hunter pitched a really nice ballgame, we unfortunately opened up the door in the fifth inning,' said OSU head coach Kirk Walker. 'Had we come up with some more plays it would have been a lot closer game.'
The Beavers were unable to get any offense going as Arizona ace, Finch, stymied OSU batters. Finch allowed just three hits while striking out 12 batters.
'Jennie Finch pitched a great game - she was very dominant,' said Walker. 'It was tough for us to get much offense going.'
The Beavers and Wildcats finish their season series on Sunday at 1 p.m.
