April 28, 2002
CLEMSON, S.C. - - The 17th-ranked OSU women's varsity eight defeated three Top-25 teams Sunday at the Clemson Classic in Clemson, South Carolina.
The Beavers beat No. 14 Washington State, No. 19 Duke, No. 24 Clemson, and Tennessee, turning in a season-best time of 6:29.4. It marked the second time this season that OSU has defeated WSU head-to-head in a varsity eight race. Head coach Charlie Owen praised his crew.
'I'm very pleased with how we rowed today,' said Owen. 'We've been working towards this race for quite a while. This was an important race for us, to see how we match up with Duke and Clemson, and hopefully to work towards getting into the NCAAs.'
The varsity eight race was tight at the finish, and the top three crews crossed the line within 3.5 seconds of each other. Washington State finished second with a time of 6:30.5, just 1.1 seconds off the pace set by the Beavers. Duke finished third, in 6:32.9, and Clemson finished fourth with a time of 6:38.2. Tennessee, the only unranked crew at the regatta, came in fifth, turning in a time of 6:45.8.
The varsity eight was OSU's only entry in Sunday's regatta.
The Beavers' next action is Saturday, May 11, when they host No. 1-ranked Washington Huskies. Racing will take place on the OSU home course at Vancouver Lake in Vancouver, Washington.
