No. 9 USC Men's Golf Wins Pac-10 Title For Second Year In A Row

April 27, 2002

CORVALLIS, Ore. - Freshman Ben Hayes fired a 69 to lead the No. 9 USC men's golf team to a dazzling four-under-par 356 in the fourth round on Saturday, as the Trojans ran away with their second consecutive conference team title at the 2002 Pac-10 Championships held at Trysting Tree Golf Course on April 25-27.

The Trojans (1441) won by 15 strokes over second place Stanford (1456). Oregon State was third (1458), followed by UCLA (1469) and Oregon (1471). It's the 17th Pac-10 team title for the Trojans in the 43-year history of competition, far more than any other school in the conference. It's also the first back-to-back league titles for Troy since 1972-1973 and its largest margin of victory at the conference championships since winning by 26 strokes over Stanford in 1975.

USC had three golfers finish in the top five. Senior Kevin Stadler led the way, shooting a three-under-par 285 (69-71-73-72) to tie for second with Philip Rowe of Stanford. It's the sixth top five finish and fourth time in the runner up spot on the year for Stadler, who leads the Trojans this season with a stroke average of 71.25. Hayes (72-73-72-69) and sophomore Scott Oxandaboure (71-73-72-70) each shot 286 to tie for fourth.

Jim Seki of Stanford won the individual crown with a four-under-par 284 as Stanford and USC dominated the top five spots.

Also for the Trojans, junior Chris Botsford was 28th (74-71-79-72--296), while junior David Oh (72-72-79-74) and freshman Nico Bollini (72-79-73-73) tied for 29th with a score of 297.

It's the third tournament title of the season for the Trojans and second in as many weeks. For USC coach Kurt Schuette, it's the 13th team title during his tenure at Troy.

By finishing in front of UCLA, USC also picked up five key points in the Lexus Gauntlet Cup, a head-to-head competition between the two schools.

The Trojans are next in action at the NCAA West Regionals held in Albuquerque, NM, on May 16-18.
