Cougs, UCLA Change Football Date
May 2, 2002
PULLMAN, Wash. - Washington State University, UCLA and the Pacific-10 Conference agreed Wednesday to a change in the date of next fall's WSU-UCLA football game, according to Jim Sterk, WSU's director of athletics.
The date between the Cougars and Bruins has been changed to December 7 at 1:30 p.m. at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, to accommodate national television, Sterk said. The Pacific-10 Conference game will now be televised nationally by ABC as part of a television tripleheader. The network will also televise the Big 12 and Southeastern Conference championship games.
Wednesday the Pacific-10 Conference athletic directors, meeting in Phoenix, voted to approve the move of the game to December 7. The game was originally scheduled for November 16 in Pasadena.
'When we approached about this move, we felt it was a great opportunity for the Cougars,' Sterk commented. 'Playing on national television with a national revenue share are certainly pluses for us and it is great from the conference standpoint. Having two prominent Pac-10 teams playing before a national audience the final week of the season will bring tremendous visibility to the league and the two teams.'
WSU head football coach Mike Price was equally pleased with the schedule change.
'Moving the game to Dec. 7 is great for us,' commented Price. 'This will give us a bye before the Apple Cup (at home against Washington) and the national exposure will be tremendous. From the weather angle, going to Pasadena in December as opposed to November is a wash and we will be able to use our indoor practice facility if the weather at home so dictates.'
