May 2, 2002

Los Angeles, Calif. -- The USC men's and women's tennis teams were each selected to compete at the 2002 NCAA Division I Tennis Championships, the NCAA announced today. The men's team will travel to Tulsa, Okla., for the first and second rounds, while the women will host a four-team regional at Marks Tennis Stadium.

The 11th-ranked Women of Troy, seeded 10th in the entire NCAA tourney, face Oral Roberts in the first round on Saturday, May 11, and UNLV and Oregon will square off in the other match. The winners of each match will face each other on Sunday, May 12, in the second round, with the winner advancing to the NCAA Round of 16 to be held in Stanford, Calif. Times have yet to be disclosed. USC finished the regular season with a 17-7 overall record and 7-1 mark in the Pac-10 (second place).

The No. 11-ranked USC men, seeded 11th in the tournament, will also face Oral Roberts on May 11 in first-round action. If USC wins, it will face either Arkansas or host Tulsa in the second round on May 12, with the winner moving to the NCAA Round of 16 in College Station, Texas. The Trojans posted a 19-5 record in regular season play and a 5-2 mark in the Pac-10 (tied for second place).

Also announced Thursday were the NCAA singles and doubles selections. For the USC women, sophomore Jewel Peterson and freshman Luana Magnani were selected to compete in the singles championship. In doubles, the women will be represented by two teams; Peterson and Tiffany Brymer and Magnani and Anita Loyola. The men had two at-large selections for the singles championship - seniors Andrew Park and Nick Rainey. Partners Ryan Moore and Rainey also received a bid to the doubles championship.
