Women's Tennis to Play UNLV in NCAA Tournament First Round Next Week

May 2, 2002

EUGENE, Ore, - The No. 39-ranked University of Oregon women's tennis team will take on No. 18-ranked UNLV in the NCAA Tournament First Round next Saturday, May 11, at Los Angeles.

The Ducks (13-10) and Rebels (20-3) winner will play either host USC (17-7), ranked No. 11 in the ITA, or Oral Roberts (11-9) on Saturday. Match times have yet to be determined.

'I'm extremely pleased for the kids because we bounced back from a difficult year last year,' sixth-year Oregon coach Jack Griffin said. 'This is what we've been talking about the last year and a half is to be in the position to go to the Tournament.

It marks Oregon's third NCAA Tournament appearance in the last four years. In 2000, the Ducks lost 5-0 to Mississippi State at Tempe, Ariz. In 1999, Oregon defeated South Florida in the first round before losing to Stanford.

The Ducks last played UNLV two years ago in a regular season dual match, as the Rebels won 6-3 at Las Vegas. Oregon's Monika Gieczys, Janice Nyland and Adeline Arnaud all competed in that match.

'Our players have worked extremely hard and it's paid off,' Griffin said. 'We're excited for a chance to play against UNLV. We feel like we're peaking right now and can beat anyone.'

The Ducks finished the regular season by winning six of their last seven dual matches, including four over ranked foes.
