Mixed Results For Cougars at Opening Day Regatta

SEATTLE, Wash. - What goes up must inevitably come down, but the Washington State women's rowing novice eight squad went out with a fight.
Head Coach Vita Scaglione led her novice eight squad to six consecutive victories before placing second Saturday at the Opening Day Regatta at Montlake Cut, near Seattle. The novice eight rowed a time of 7:15.39, behind Washington's novice 'A' boat time of 7:01.94. The Cougar novice squad had defeated Washington in two previous competitions entering Saturday.
The junior varsity eight came into the Opening Day Regatta with a fight on their hands against heavy competition in Stanford, Western Washington and Washington. The second varsity eight crossed the line in second place at 6:57, defeating Stanford's time of 6:59.52.
The varsity four boat cut through the water with a time of 7:57.57 for third place, just behind Stanford at 7:51.70, and UW at 7:38.40.
Cougar women's rowing will next compete Sunday, May 19, in the Pacific-10 Rowing Championships at Lake Natoma at Rancho Cordova, Calif.
