No. 16 Softball Drops Game With Top-Ranked UCLA, 10-1

May 4, 2002

CORVALLIS, Ore. - The No. 16 ranked Oregon State softball team dropped its game against top-ranked UCLA, 10-1, on Saturday afternoon at the OSU Softball Complex.

The Bruins (46-6; 14-3 Pac-10) used 15 hits, including six doubles and three home runs to overwhelm the Beavers (38-19; 7-10 Pac-10), en route to their 13th consecutive victory.

'It was an extremely disappointing day,' said OSU head coach Kirk Walker.

UCLA jumped in front in the first inning, posting one run on consecutive doubles by Amanda Freed, Tairia Mims and Stacey Nuveman against Beaver starter Monica Hoffman. Freed scored on Mims' double, while Mims stopped at third base on Nuveman's hit. Hoffman worked her way out of a jam when she got Chrissy Buck to pop-up and Stephanie Ramos grounded out to end the inning.

Clare Burnum ledoff Oregon State's half of the first with a single to left-center field but the Beavers were unable to capitalize.

The Bruins added three more runs in the second inning, when Mims blasted a two-out three-run home run to left field.

Kristen Hunter entered the game in the fourth inning for the Beavers and had retired six-straight before Toria Auelua's one-out double in the sixth. Natasha Watley followed with an RBI-single to right field, giving UCLA a 5-0 cushion.

The Bruins weren't done as they added five more runs in the seventh. Nuveman was the lead-off batter in the top of the seventh inning, and sent the first pitch over the left field fence. It was the 16th home run of the season for Nuveman, and the 86th of her UCLA career, giving her sole possession of the NCAA career home run record and surpassing the total set by Arizona's Leah Braatz and Laura Espinoza (85).

After Nuveman's record-breaking home run, UCLA added four more runs on five hits.

Oregon State broke-up the shutout when pinch-hitter Brynnen Guthrie belted a two-out RBI double off the left field fence that scored Kelly Petersen from first base.

Jessica King added an infield single in the fourth inning, as OSU finished with three hits on the day.

Oregon State wraps-up its home campaign on Sunday afternoon against the Bruins. The game is the final contest in Corvallis for the five Beaver seniors: Jenni Jodoin, Traci Feldt, Michelle Chariton, Michelle Notaro, and Crystal Draper. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
