No. 5 California Shutout By No. 2 Arizona, 3-0
May 3, 2002
TUCSON, Ariz. - Home runs by Lovie Jung and Leneah Manuma in a three-run third inning propelled Arizona (46-7, 13-3 Pac-10) to a 3-0 victory over California (45-17, 9-7 Pac-10) in Friday night in front of 2,261 at Hillebrand Stadium.
A crowd of 2,261 watched Arizona pitcher Jennie Finch settle down after a bit of early trouble and throw hitless ball for the final five innings to earn her 28th victory of the year.
The Golden Bears loaded the bases in the first but came up empty on the scoreboard. Kaleo Eldredge reached on a catcher's interference, Kristen Morley hit into a fielder's choice, Candace Harper singled and Veronica Nelson drew her 86th walk of the season. But Finch struck out Courtney Scott and forced Jessica Pamanian into a pop up to end the rally.
A one-out single by Mikella Pedretti and a walk by Kristen Bayless gave Cal another runner in scoring position in the second inning. Finch got Eldredge to fly out and Morley singled, but UA left fielder Courtney Fossatti gunned down pinch-runner Jocelyn Forest at the plate.
Forest, who had thrown a one-hitter in beating Arizona, 2-1, in Berkeley April 21, held the Cats hitless for two innings, but shortstop Lovie Jung greeted her with a homerun, her 15th of the year, to lead off the third inning for Arizona.
Fossatti singled on the next pitch and an out later Manuma hit her 18th homer to make it 3-0.That chased Forest and the Bears brought on Cassie Bobrow, who pitched 3.2 scoreless innings in extended relief.
The Bears travel upstate to battle Arizona State Saturday, May 4 at 7 p.m. at Farrington Stadium.
