No. 5 Bears Drop Extra-Inning Affair to No. 4 Arizona State, 2-1

May 5, 2002

TEMPE, Ariz. - Sophomore Phelan Wright's single to left field to drive in Missy Hixon from third in the bottom of the eighth was the difference in the game as No. 5 California (45-19, 9-9 Pac-10) lost in extra innings to fourth-ranked Arizona State (40-14, 10-8 Pac-10) 2-1 this afternoon at Farrington Stadium.

The Golden Bears got on the board first in the second inning off one ASU error. Freshman Chelsea Spencer started the inning with a single to left field. She then advanced to second on a wild pitch by Beach. Junior Mikella Pedretti followed with a sacrifice to move Spencer to third. Kristen Bayless then walked to put runners on the corners. Then it appeared that Cal was attempting to squeeze home Spencer, but Kaleo Eldredge missed the bunt, however ASU catcher Adriana Garcia's throw down to third to pick off Spencer went wide of the base into left field, allowing Spencer to come home.

Arizona State soon tied it up in the fourth inning when Jennifer Forner hit her first career home run, a solo shot, over the right field fence. The game would go scoreless until the bottom of the eighth when ASU scored the winning run.

Senior Jocelyn Forest went the distance with her 26th complete game of the season, but dropped to 20-12 on the year, scattering six hits with two runs and seven strikeouts.

Junior Veronica Nelson walked all three at-bats, and now has 90 on the season, just four shy of breaking her own single-season NCAA walk record.

The Bears conclude the regular season when they host Oregon, Friday, May 10 at 2 p.m. and Oregon State in a doubleheader, May 11 starting at 1 p.m.
