Monique Henderson Selected Student-Athlete of the Week

May 6, 2002

Freshman quarter-miler Monique Henderson (San Diego, CA/Morse HS) of the UCLA Women's Track & Field Team was selected as the Student-Athlete of the Week for the week of Apr. 29-May 5.

Henderson led UCLA to a 111-92 dual meet victory over rival USC Saturday afternoon, contributing 13 points (five individual and eight on relays) to the Bruin team total. Henderson broke the meet record in the 400m with an impressive time of 51.33 (old record was 51.48 set by UCLA's Andrea Anderson in 1998). It is the top collegiate mark this season and the No. 3 time in the world behind Marion Jones (50.46) and Ana Guevara (51.28A). Henderson's time is also an NCAA automatic qualifier and the No. 2 mark in school history.

In addition to winning the 400m, Henderson anchored both of UCLA's relay teams, including the 4x400m relay, where her anchor leg pushed the Bruins to first in the come-from-behind 3:32.02-3:32.98 victory.

This is Henderson's first Student-Athlete of the Week honor of the season and her career.

Also nominated: Mike Kunes (baseball), Scott Moser (m. track & field) and Stacey Nuveman (softball).
