Bears Receive NCAA Regional Bid

May 7, 2002

BERKELEY - Cal's men's golf team has received a bid to the NCAA West Regional to be contested May 16-18 at the University of New Mexico Championship Golf Course in Albuquerque. The Bears are seeded 21st in the 27-team field.

Cal is one of nine Pac-10 teams in field. USC is the top seed, with Washington at No. 5 and Arizona at No. 9.

The top 10 teams and the top 2 individuals not on those teams will advance to the NCAA championships in Columbus, Ohio, May 29-June 1. Similar formats will be held May 16-18 at two other regional sites around the country: Georgia Tech (East Regional) and Arkansas-Little Rock (South Regional).

The Bears are led by sophomore Peter Tomasulo, who was recently voted first team All-Pac-10. Tomasulo tied for 14th at the Pac-10 tournament last month with a 3-over-par total of 291. He has six Top 10 finishes during the season, including a tie for second at the Husky Invitational last fall.

Last year, the Bears placed 16th at the regional held at Oregon State. Cal last advanced out of regionals to the national tournament in 2000.
