WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - In a vote by conference coaches, Stanford senior Gabriela Lastra (Reno, Nev.) has been named the 2002 Pac-10 Women's Tennis Player of the Year, while Lastra and fellow senior Lauren Kalvaria (Indialantic, Fla.) were awarded the 2002 Pac-10 Doubles Team of the Year award.
Lastra, ranked No. 6 in the nation, enters this weekend's NCAA First Round match against Sacramento State with a 32-7 overall (18-3 dual) record. She captured the singles title at the Pac-10 Championships with a 6-3, 6-3 win over USC's Jewel Peterson on Apr. 28, and has won her last 14 matches. Playing primarily at the No. 2 position this year, Lastra has notched a 15-1 mark in such matches. She will be representing Stanford in the 64-player NCAA singles tournament, which is scheduled for May 20-25.
The tandem of Lastra and Kalvaria represent the Cardinal's top duo and the No. 1 doubles team in the country. Lastra-Kalvaria are 24-2 overall (16-1 dual) and will be one of two Cardinal teams participating in the NCAA doubles tournament, slated for May 20-25. The duo is 16-1 at the No. 1 spot of the lineup and is currently riding an 11-game winning streak.
Sophomore Lauren Barnikow (Woodbridge, N.J.) and freshman Erin Burdette (Jackson, Ga.) were named to the All Pac-10 Second Team. Barnikow is currently ranked No. 16 and is 30-8 overall (19-3 dual). Burdette checks in at No. 13 with a team-best 35-6 (21-1 dual) overall mark.
