A busy weekend lies ahead for numerous members of the Stanford track & field team ... On Friday (5/10) at Cobb Track & Angell Field, Stanford will host the Cardinal Qualifier ... Field events kickoff at 4:30 p.m. with the men's hammer, while the running events will start at 6:00 pm. with the 100 meter hurdles ... The key event on the schedule is the men's 800 meters which is slated for 7:35 p.m. ... Among those entered are Kenyan Japheth Kimutai, who ran 1:42.69 in 1999, current and past Stanford stars Michael Stember, Gabriel Jennings and Jason Lunn along with Kenyans Bernard Lagat and Ben Kipkurui ... The following day, several Stanford sprinters and throwers will compete at the Modesto Relays ... Two Stanford athletes are heading north to Pullman, Wa, to compete in the 2002 Pac-10 Heptathlon/Decathlon Championships at Washington State ... Lillian Bush, who has a career-best 5,015 points, will compete along with freshman Ahimsa Hodari, who has a season-best 4,716 points ... Bush' point total is fifth-best in the Pac-10 this year.
Stanford track & field athletes have performed with high marks in 2002 ... Thirteen Cardinal athletes have qualified for the NCAA's which will be held in Baton Rouge, La (May 29-June 1) ... The list includes Caroline Annis (10,000 meters, 34:09.40, fifth-best all-time at Stanford), Jillian Camarena (shot put, 53-10 1/4, second-best all-time at Stanford), Lauren Fleshman (1,500 meters, 4:18.11; 5,000 meters, 15:35.59, #2 all-time at Stanford), Omer Inan in the discus (198-7, school record), Gabriel Jennings in the 1,500 meters (3:41.48), Louis Luchini (5,000 meters, 13:42.31, 10,000 meters, 28:49.86, seventh-best all-time at Stanford), Jessica Pluth in the hammer (196-2, school record), Jonathon Riley (5,000 meters, 13:29.15), Grant Robison (5,000 meters, 13:40.30) and Donald Sage (10,000 meters, 28:40.12, sixth-best all-time at Stanford), Adam Tenforde in the 10,000 meters (28:57.65), Jesse Thomas in the 3,000 meter steeplechase (8:39.90), and Ashley Wysong in the 800 meters (2:04.75) ... Nineteen other Stanford athletes have qualified provisionally for the NCAA Championships, while 42 other athletes have qualified for the Pac-10 Championships (May 18-19) at Washington State.
Several Stanford athletes rank high in the Pac-10 standings for track & field ... Jesse Thomas is #1 in the conference in the 3,000 meter steeplechase (8:39.90), Jonathon Riley is the conference leader in the 5,000 meters at 13:29.15, while Grant Robison (13:40.30), Louis Luchini (13:42.31) and Seth Hejny (13:50.77) rank 2-3-4, respectively ... Donald Sage is tops in the 10,000 meters (28:40.12) while Luchini is third at 28:49.86 ... Michael Ponikvar is first in the high jump (7-2 1/2) ... Laura Turner is first in the 3,000 meter steeplechase (10:16.24) while Jean Goff is fourth at 10:22.46 ... Lauren Fleshman is tops in the 5,000 meters (15:35.59) ... Omer Inan is second in the Pac-10 in the discus (198-7) ... Stanford ranks third through sixth in the 1,500 meters led by Gabriel Jennings (3:41.48) ... Milton Little is ranked third in the long jump (24-4 1/2) ... Nick Welihozkiy is ranked fourth in the hammer (195-2) ... Fleshman is second in the Pac-10 in the 1,500 meters (4:18.11) while Ashley Wysong is fourth in the 800 meters (2:04.75) ... Caroline Annis and Erin Sullivan rank second and third, respectively, in the 10,000 meters at 34:09.40 and 34:10.32 ... Jill Camarena resides in fourth place in the Pac-10 in the shot put (53-10 1/4) ... Jessica Pluth is fifth in the conference in the hammer (196-2).
Two Stanford athletes have won awards as Pac-10 Track & Field Athletes of the Week ... Jonathon Riley captured weekly league honors by recording the second fastest time in the United States in the 5,000 meters with a time of 13:29.15 at the Cardinal Invitational (5/3/02) ... Lauren Fleshman won weekly league honors with a time of 15:35.59 in the 5,000 meters at the Mt. SAC Relays (4/20/02), the fastest time by a collegiate runner in 2002.
Three school records have been broken this year ... Omer Inan estabished a new school record in the javelin with a throw of 198-7 (60.53m) at the UCSD Invitational (4/27/02) ... Jessica Pluth broke the school record in the hammer with an effort of 196-2 (59.79) at the Cal Open (4/27/02) ... Kathleen Donoghue broke her own record in the pole vault with a leap of 13-5 1/4 (4.10m) at The Big Meet (5/3/02) ... Several Stanford athletes have jumped into the Top 5 all-time in the Stanford record book ... Grant Robison and Louis Luchini have jumped to fourth and fifth-best all-time at Stanford in the 5,000 meters with respective times of 13:40.30 and 13:42.31 ... Junior Lauren Fleshman's time of 15:35.59 in the 5,000 meters has moved her to second place all-time at Stanford ... Jill Camarena has thrown the shot put 53-10 1/4 this year, good for second place all-time in the record book ... Jesse Thomas' time of 8:39.90 in the 3,000 meter steeplechase at the Cardinal Invitational (5/3/02) has vaulted him into second place all-time at Stanford ... Jonathan Riley ran 13:29.15 in the 5,000 meters at the Cardinal Invitational (5/3/02) to move into second place all-time at Stanford ... Ashley Wysong ran a 2:04.75 at the Cardinal Invitational (5/3/02) to move into second place all-time at Stanford in the 800 meters ... Kimberly Stone has leaped 5-10 3/4 in the high jump to rank fourth all-time ... Molly Meyer threw the discus 173-4 to rank fifth all-time on The Farm ... Freshman Christine Moschella has jumped to fourth all-time in the 400 meters (55.18) ... Caroline Annis has a time of 34:09.40 in the 10,000 meters, fifth-best in the record book ... The 400 meter relay team of Curtis Goehring, Nick Sebes, Evan Kelty and Stanley Wilson rank #2 in the school record book with a time of 40.26 at The Big Meet (5/4/02) ... The 1,600 meter relay team of Danielle McMillian, Cherise Thompson, Ashley Wysong and Christine Moschella ran a 3:43.15 at The Big Meet (5/4/02), #2 all-time at Stanford.
