SEATTLE, Wa. - Washington freshman Alex Vlaski (Belgrade, Yugoslavia) was named the Region Eight Intercollegiate Tennis Association's Rookie Player of the Year, announced by the Regional Awards Committee on Thursday.

This is the second award in a week for Vlaski who received Pac-10 Freshman of the Year honors on Tuesday.

Vlaski, who is currently ranked 29th by the ITA, has had an impressive freshman campaign thus far that includes an overall record of 23-7, while posting a 15-5 mark in dual play. He has played at the No. 1 and No. 2 singles spots all year long, notching a 7-3 and 8-2 record respectively, with 12 wins coming over ranked opponents.

At the Pac-10 Championships in Ojai, Calif. this past April, Vlaski advanced to the championship finals, the first Husky player in history to do so. He posted a 4-1 mark in the tournament before being defeated in the conference finals by Rodrigo Grilli of UCLA, 6-4, 6-3. Vlaski owns an 8-2 open mark on the year.

Vlaski, along with fellow teammate Matt Hanlin (Birmingham, England), were both selected to the 64-man NCAA Singles Championships to be played in College Station, Texas, May 22-27. Vlaski will also be considered, along with seven other regional players, for the National ITA Rookie of the Year, to be named at the NCAA Championships Banquet.

The honor was the second such in school history as Robert Kendrick was also named Rookie of the Year in 1998.

The 35th-ranked Husky men's tennis team will face No. 32 Tulane in the first round of the NCAA Division I Men's Tennis Tournament on Sat., May 11 at 9:00 a.m., on the campus of Stanford University. The postseason berth is Washington's eighth consecutive under head coach Matt Anger.

Both Vlaski and Hanlin were selected to the All-Pac-10 second team.
