Women's Crew Announces Strong Recruiting Class

Cal women's crew announced the signing of eight rowing recruits for the 2002-03 academic year. Head coach Dave O'Neill believes the incoming class, including those who signed National Letters of Intent, to be the strongest in his tenure at Cal. 'Each year the standards are raised as we recruit the finest student-athletes in the bay area, California and beyond. The eight that signed NLI's reflect the efforts of the past year and a glimpse to the future of the program.'

Below is a list of 2002-03 Cal Women's Crew Signees:

Julie McCarthy, 5'11, Warwick, RIPlayed soccer and rows at Noble and Greenough School in Dedham, MA. O'Neill's quote: 'Julie is perfect for Cal and our program. She is still relatively new to the sport, but she is a great athlete with a terrific spirit.'

Liz Nelson, 5'11', Belmont, CARows with Serra/ Notre Dame/ Mercy H.S. crew. attended '00 jr. national development camp. O'Neill's quote: 'We look for recruits that are good kids who are serious about academics and athletics, and Liz fits that description perfectly. She has a great future as a Golden Bear.'

Megan Reitz, 5'11', Coronado, CA3 year varsity rower at San Diego Rowing Club. Won gold medal in 4x at '01 USRowing Youth Invitational. O'Neill's quote: 'Megan has made a definite impact at her club in San Diego, and she will continue that success at Cal.'

Erin Rheinhart, 5'10', Berkeley, CARows at Berkeley H.S. Rowed six-seat for U.S. at '01 Can-Am-Mex Regatta.O'Neill's quote: 'Erin is a real competitor. In one of my first conversations with her, she stated her intent to win a national championship in college, and she is someone to help our program towards that goal.'

Kelly Segars, 5'6', Greenbrae, CA3 year varsity rower at Marin R.A. won silver medal at '01 USRowing Youth Invitational. O'Neill's quote: 'Kelly might not be very big, but she has proven herself at one of the best junior programs in the country. She has a lot to offer in terms of athletic ability and attitude.'

Kaylan Vander Schilden, 6'1', Victoria, British Columbia'00 Canadien junior national team member. Member of Vic City Rowing Club.O'Neill's quote: 'Kaylan just might be the top recruit from Canada. She is stroking a Vic City crew that has won everything up and down the entire West Coast, and I expect her to make an immediate impact on the program.'

Shauna Walchenbach, 5'10', Seattle, WARows at Green Lake R.C. Rowed five-seat for U.S. at '01 Can-Am-Mex Regatta. O'Neill's quote: 'Shauna is one of the best recruits from the Seattle area. She has a ton of experience and is a very skilled rower. I have also been impressed with her maturity.'

Sabine Zimmerman, 5'11', Berlin, Germany2 year exchange student at Winter Park H.S. in Orlando, FL. Began rowing at Winter Park.O'Neill's quote: 'I am really pleased that Sabine is coming to Cal. She was heavily recruited by other Pac-10 programs and with good reason. She is a terrific athlete, serious student and wonderful person. I look forward to working with her.'
