The Washington State baseball team returns to conference action this week against Arizona, beginning Friday at 7 p.m. at Frank Sancet Field in Tucson, Ariz.

The Cougars enter the weekend slate with a 19-29 record overall and a 4-14 mark in the Pac-10. Arizona is 29-20 overall and 7-11 in the conference.

Last weekend, WSU played a three-game non-conference series with NAIA power Lewis-Clark State. The Cougars won the opener Saturday, 9-7 at Bailey-Brayton Field, but dropped the next two contests, one at Bailey-Brayton and the other at Harris Field in Lewiston, Idaho.

The two teams split their season series 2-2.

Senior second baseman Bookie Gates led the way against LCSC with a 6-for-12 performance at the plate, boosting his season average to .376.

Senior center fielder Evan Hecker was 5-for-13 and is now batting .341, while senior right fielder Tyson Boston hit two home runs and collected five RBI.

The Cougars head to Arizona, already four games ahead of last season's 15-game win total and need two wins this weekend to match last season's conference wins.

Last year, Arizona won two of three games against WSU at Bailey-Brayton Field. The Wildcats, eighth in the conference standings, lead the all-time series 12-5.

The Cougars will conclude their season next week on the road with a three-game series against Stanford. The series begins Friday, May 24, at 6 p.m. at Sunken Diamond in Stanford, Calif.
