Cardinal Head To Washington For NCAA Championships

Stanford Prepares For NCAA Championships: The Stanford women's golf team will be making their 14th consecutive appearance at the NCAA Championships this year, as the Universityof Washington hosts the 2002 NCAA Women's Golf Championships, May 21-24, at the Washington National Golf Club in Auburn, Washington.

The Field: The 24 teams and six individuals are as follows: Arizona, Arizona State, Auburn, California, Duke, Florida, Georgia, Michigan, Michigan State, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Pepperdine, Purdue, South Carolina, South Florida, Southern California, Stanford, Texas, Tulsa, UCLA, Vanderbilt, Wake Forest, Washington, Meredith Duncan (LSU), Meaghan Francella (Memphis), Martina Gillen (Kent State), Melanie Hagewood (Baylor), Kristi Larson (New Mexico) and Alena Sharp (New Mexico State). A total of 126 competitors will comprise this year's field.

Format: The Washington National Golf Club, located in Auburn, Washington, is a par 72, 6,273 yard course. Teams will play 18 holes each day over the four-day tournament. The low four scores for each five player team will count towards the team total.

Tickets: VIP all-session passes will be available for $100; Adult all-session will be $20; Youth all-session (high school and younger) are $15; Adult single-session are $8 and youth single are $6.

Cardinal Tee Times: For the first two days of competition, the Cardinal will be grouped with South Florida and Oklahoma State. Stanford will begin teeing off at 8:10 a.m. PT on Tuesday from the first tee. On Wednesday, the Cardinal will tee off from the 10th tee beginning at 12:10 p.m.

Last Year at NCAAs: Last year, the Cardinal finished ninth with a team score of 1201 at the 2001 NCAA Championships in Howey-in-the-Hills, Florida. Kim Rowton led Stanford, tying for 25th individually with a 298. Teammate Angela Rho tied for 38th (302) while Kim Kouwabunpat tied for 68th (309).

Last Time Out: Stanford finished turned in a 294 on the final day of competition at the NCAA West Regional to finish fifth overall with a 901 to qualify for the 2002 NCAA Championships. The Cardinal was led by junior Kim Rowton who finished tied for 19th ,carding a 225 (76-75-73). Sophomore Angela Rho recorded her fourth top-25 finish as she tied for 25 with a 226 (78-76-72). Teammates Wendra Liang (74-76-77) and Marcia Wallis (78-77-72) tied for 29th. Sophomore Kim Kouwabunpat tied for 55th with a 235 (75-83-77.

Rowton and Liang Tabbed To All-Conference Teams: Junior Kim Rowton was a second-team All-Pac-10 selection while freshman Wendra Liang was an honorable mention pick when the league office announced the 2001-02 conference golf awards.

NCAA Notes: Freshman Wendra Liang and sophomore Marcia Wallis will be competing in their first NCAA Championships for the Cardinal ... Junior Kim Rowton is ranked 39th nationally in the individual rankings ... Stanford's best finish at an NCAA Women's Golf Championship was second in 2000 ... The Cardinal has finished in the top 10 at NCAAs for the past eight years.

Coach O'Conner: Head coach Caroline O'Connor is in her seventh season at the helm of the Stanford women's golf program after leading the Cardinal to its best ever finish at the NCAA Championships in 1999-00 (second place). Under O'Connor's tutelage, Stanford has finished in the top 10 nationally for the past eight years and captured its first conference title in 1999. O'Connor is only the second coach in the 23 year history of the women's program. Last year, the Cardinal notched top 10 finishes in all 11 tournaments they participated in and had nine top 5 finishes. Stanford has now competed in the national championships in 20 of its 23 years.
