No. 2 Seeded Softball Tops No. 5 seed Wisconsin In NCAA Regional Tournament, 1-0
May 16, 2002
IOWA CITY, Iowa - Senior Michelle Chariton's first inning run provided all of the scoring as the No. 2 seeded Oregon State softball team knocked off No. 5 seed Wisconsin, 1-0, on Thursday afternoon in the opening round of the NCAA Regional Tournament.
Oregon State (39-23) used solid pitching and took advantage of two first inning Wisconsin (31-21) errors to record the postseason victory.
'A win in the first round is always big,' said OSU head coach Kirk Walker. 'Our pitchers did a nice job and Traci (Feldt) called a great game.'
All the game's scoring occurred in the first inning. Chariton reached on a one-out error from Badger third baseman Diana Consolmagno and advanced to second behind a single by Brynnen Guthrie. Cleanup batter Shelly Prochaska followed with a shot that went under the glove of Consolmagno at third and bounced off the base toward the Beaver dugout. Chariton, running on the play, rounded third and headed home, scoring what proved to be the game-winner.
Senior hurler Crystal Draper started in the circle for the Beavers, allowing just two hits in 3.2 innings of work while striking out five. Draper, who has thrown well in 10 postseason appearances, upped her OSU career-leading strikeout total to 797.
Sophomore pitcher Monica Hoffman recorded the victory, her 14th of the season, after relieving Draper in the fourth. Hoffman allowed just one hit while striking out five batters. In two postseason appearances Hoffman is 2-0, allowing just two hits while recording eight K's.
Wisconsin pitcher Andrea Kirchberg allowed just three Beaver hits but was hurt by three errors.
'I would have liked our offense to adjust more, but we were a little tight,' said Walker. 'The pitchers had a great game on both sides.'
Guthrie finished the game a perfect 2-for-2 from the plate while senior Jenni Jodoin was 1-for-3. With her hit, Jodoin upped her postseason batting average to a team-leading .281.
The Beavers return to action at 2:30 p.m. PDT, on Friday against No. 3 seed Notre Dame. The Fighting Irish were 3-2 winners against No. 4 seed Iowa.
