Baseball Drops 3-1 Decision At Arizona State

MESA, Ariz. - Jered Liebeck threw seven shutout innings Friday and the Arizona State Sun Devils defeated the No. 19 USC Trojans, 3-1, in Pac-10 Conference action at HoHoKam Stadium. Liebeck allowed seven hits and struck out eight batters as neither pitching staff allowed a walk in the game. Anthony Reyes (4-1) suffered his first loss of the season, allowing three runs on seven hits with six strikeouts in seven innings of work.
With Arizona State's win, the Pac-10 Conference race grows tighter thanks to wins by Washington and Stanford. USC, 30-21 overall, is still in first place in the conference with a 13-6 record, one game ahead of Washington and Stanford. Arizona State, who is now 31-18 overall, is two games back in fourth place with an 11-7 mark.
Rod Allen led off the second with a single to left for the Sun Devils. Designated hitter Bryce Kartler hit a bloop double to left, advancing Allen to third. Catcher Cesar Castillo hit a ground ball to USC first baseman Bill Peavey, who threw the ball to the plate, but the throw was wide and bounced out of catcher Alberto Concepcion's glove to give ASU a 1-0 lead.
The Trojans had several opportunities to score, but failed to capitalize. In the sixth, third baseman Jon Brewster singled to left followed by a hit-and-run single by center fielder Brian Barre, moving Brewster to third. Shortstop Michael Moon fouled out to the catcher, Concepcion struck out and Peavey grounded out to first.
Designated hitter Joey Metropoulos singled in the top of the seventh, but Liebeck struck out the side to end the Trojan threat.
Arizona State led off their half of the seventh with a single by Jeremy West and double by Allen. Kartler hit a two-run double to right center, making it a 3-0 lead.
USC scored its lone run in the ninth on a run-scoring ground ball by Travis McAndrews.
The Trojans continue their series with the Sun Devils tomorrow at 6 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m. Both games will be broadcast live, along with Live Stats play-by-play, on usctrojans.com.
