May 17, 2002

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Washington State senior Jon Reehoorn is tied for 13th after two rounds of the NCAA West Regional at the par 72, 7,368 yard, University of New Mexico Championship Course, Friday.

Following up an even par 72 in Thursday's opening round with a one over 73 in the second round, Reehoorn is at 145 (+1) heading into Saturday's final 18 holes. Reehoorn started his second round with three consecutive birdies, which briefly placed the Burlington, Wash. native in a tie for the tournament lead at three under par.

Reehoorn, who began his round on the 10th tee, remained at three under until going bogey, double bogey on holes No. 17 and 18, respectively, which brought him back to even par at the turn. On the back nine, Reehoorn recorded a pair of birdies along with three bogeys to finish his round at one over par.

Reehoorn is part of a group of nine players tied for 13th in the 141-man field, eight shots back of tournament leader Ricky Barnes of Arizona who fired a tournament best 67, Friday. Barnes is at seven under 137, five shots ahead of a quartet of players. Reehoorn is still in contention for one of the two individual selections to the national championships, May 29-June 1, at Ohio State University's Scarlet Course in Columbus, Ohio. The top 10 teams in the 27-team regional and two individuals (from teams that do not qualify) will advance to Columbus.

WSU did not catch a break in the weather as the team played during the morning in windy conditions; however the winds subsided after the Cougars completed their round, which made for nearly perfect playing conditions for those teams playing in the afternoon, according to WSU Head Coach Walt Williams.

Despite the wind, the Cougars improved on their first round score of 302 with a 296 in the second round and are in 18th place with a total of 598. WSU is nine shots back of 10th position, which is held by Pacific and Pepperdine. UNLV leads the team competition with a score of 582, one stroke better than Fresno State.

'Each day we have played a little better,' said Williams. 'We played better today than yesterday and I suspect we will play better tomorrow. We're hitting the ball well but we just need a few more putts to fall.'

Dustin White carded a 73 in his second round, which featured an eagle on the par-4 sixth hole as the junior holed a sand wedge from the fairway. White moved up from a tie for 93rd position to start the day to a tie for 59th position.

Also in a tie for 59th is senior Jeremy Taylor, who followed up a 74, Thursday with a 76 in the second round. Sophomore Isaac Woods improved on an opening 79 with a 74 in the second round and is nine over heading into Saturday's final 18 holes. Fellow sophomore Ryan Camp carded an 83 to round out the Cougar roster.

The Cougars begin Saturday's final round at 11 a.m. Pacific Time. Live web scoring of the NCAA West Regional can be accessed at
