Men's Crew Flounders In Pac-10 Finals
May 19, 2002
SACRAMENTO, Calif. - - Although all three Beaver crews advanced to their Grand Finals and placed third at the Pac-10 Rowing Championships in Sacramento, Calif. on Sunday, the Oregon State coaches and athletes were disappointed with their performance.
'We got clobbered today. As a coach, it's my job to get my crews ready to race, and so I take the responsibility for it,' said head coach Dave Reischman. 'But we're going to find a way to put it right at nationals.'
The OSU varsity eight finished with a time of 6:06.9, 12.6 seconds behind second-place Washington and 13.5 seconds behind first-place California. Reischman said the boat got off to a good start, but was unable to settle into the race properly.
'We were working on being more aggressive off the starting line, and I think we were, but we just weren't able to shift down and find the rhythm we needed at our race pace,' said Reischman.
The JV eight also placed third behind Washington and California. The Beavers crew turned in a time of 6:39.0, almost 25 seconds off the winning pace set by the Bears. Fourth-place UC Davis was far behind the top three crews, finishing in 6:50.7.
In the novice eight race, the third-place Beavers stayed closer, finishing only 2.7 seconds behind second-place California. The Huskies turned in a time of 6:20.6 to win the novice race.
'We're a crew that has been pretty consistent all year, and we have gotten used to a certain rhythm. We just didn't have that rhythm today,' said Reischman.
The Beavers will see their next action at the IRA Collegiate National Championships on May 30 and June 1 in Camden, New Jersey.
