No. 8 Cal Women's Varsity Eight Takes Silver At Pac-10s

May 19, 2002

The No.8 ranked Cal Women's varsity eight sprinted through Stanford to finish with the silver medal at the Pac-10 Rowing Championships on Lake Natoma in Rancho Cordova, May 19. Top ranked Washington took home the gold, but the Bears strong performance solidified Cal's bid for a team invitation to the 2002 NCAA Rowing Championships.

'Going into the varsity race we knew a lot was riding on it,' said coach Dave O'Neill. 'It came down to the last 300 meters and the varsity really pulled out a great sprint. I couldn't be happier with the race they had today.'

In the varsity race, No. 1 Washington had open water on the field early with Cal and Stanford battling for second position. The Cardinal took a two seat advantage on the Bears through the 1000 and extended it lead in the third 500. However, in the race for the silver, the last 500 belonged to Cal as it made up nearly a length on Stanford in the final stanza. Washington State which raced in fourth position for the majority of the contest also got past the Cardinal to claim bronze. USC finished fifth and Oregon State sixth.

Cal's varsity coxed four pulled away from Washington in the second 1000 meters of the race to bring home the Bears first ever Pac-10 Championship in an NCAA event. By the time the crews crossed the finish.

'I'm really proud of the four,' said O'Neill. 'The four has been going really well all year long and it was another great race today. They're looking forward to the racing in Indianapolis.'

Cal novice eight raced in second position for much of its race, but paid the price in the final 500 meters on the course slipping to fourth overall. Cal's JV eight, was in the medal hunt for 1500 meters of its race, but was unable to hold of Stanford who snared the bronze.

At the conclusion of racing, Megan Cooke, Ariana Canova and Shelle Orem were named to the All-Pac-10 Women's Rowing Team.
