Diggs, Famulener Awarded Scholarships

May 22, 2002

BERKELEY - A.J. Diggs and Conor Famulener, who both walked on to the Cal basketball team two seasons ago, have been awarded full scholarships, head coach Ben Braun announced today.

'Conor and A.J. epitomize our team's work ethic and overall dedication,' said Braun. 'They are the ultimate team players, always thinking of the team first and themselves second. I wanted to reward both of them, not only for their prowess on the court, but for their academic excellence off the court, as well.'

Diggs, a 5-10 guard out of Long Beach Poly High School who will be a junior at Cal next year, played in all 32 games for the 23-9 Bears last season. He had six starts during 2001-02 and averaged 3.2 points, 1.6 assists and 16.5 minutes per game. More importantly, Diggs led Cal with 47 steals to rank 10th in the Pac-10 in steals per game. His best game came in the home finale vs. USC when he finished with 12 points, four assists and three steals.

'I knew I had to work hard because of the rich tradition of walk-ons at Cal,' said Diggs. 'My main focus is on academics, and this is an added bonus.'

Famulener joined Cal prior to the 2000-01 season after winning a state championship in 2000 at De La Salle High School in Concord. The 6-5 forward saw action in 21 games for the Bears last season, averaging 1.1 ppg and 0.9 rpg in 5.1 minutes per contest. He had a high of five points vs. Harvard and contributed four points and five rebounds in a victory at Washington State.

'I'm thrilled,' said Famulener. 'I would like to thank Coach Braun and the rest of the staff. I'm going to continue to work hard to show that they made the right decision.'

Diggs and Famulener are the fourth and fifth walk-ons to receive scholarships since Braun became head coach in September 1996, joining Robbie Jones, Morgan Lingle and Ryan Forehan-Kelly. Both Lingle and Forehan-Kelly went on to earn first team Pac-10 All-Academic honors during their careers.
