Fruttero Advances at NCAA Championship

COLLEGE STATION, Tex. - Cal junior John Paul Fruttero (18-7) advanced to the second round of the NCAA Singles Championship today, defeating Tennessee's Mario Toledo.

11th-ranked Fruttero, a 9/16 seed, overcame losing the first set and dominated No. 20 Toledo in the second and third stanzas, ultimately taking the match 5-7, 6-2, 6-2.

Fruttero will have a busy day Thursday, first facing a fellow Pac-10 player in UCLA's Roberto Grilli in the second round. Grilli downed Brian Wilson (Illinois) in straight sets, 6-3, 7-5 to advance. Cal's team captain will also join teammate Robert Kowalczyk on the doubles courts on Thursday, taking on Brigham Young's Gert Yilms and Carlos Lozano, who are a 5-8 seed in the 32-tandem draw.

Singles matches will be played in the morning, while doubles will commence in the afternoon.
