May 24, 2002

AUBURN, Wash. - No. 16 California finished the 72-hole NCAA Championships in 15th place with a score of 1193 Friday at the par 72, 6273-yard Washington National Golf Course. The Golden Bears shot a 300 in the final round to finish one stroke behind No. 15 USC for 14th.

In Cal's inaugural NCAA Championships appearance in 2001, the Bears placed 19th with a score of 1234.

No. 7 Arizona, which led for the first three rounds, was overtaken by No. 2 Duke in the final few holes Friday. The Blue Devils, which finished as the runner-ups in 2001, began the day in third and three shots off the pace. They shot a final round of minus-one 287 to finish at 1164, six strokes ahead of Arizona, No. 1 Auburn and No. 5 Texas, which all tied for second.

No. 10 Georgia, which won last year's NCAA title, was fifth at 1176.

Duke's Virada Nirapathpongporn led the individual race wire-to-wire, posting an even-par 72 in the final round to finish at minus-nine 279. She finished five shots ahead (284) of four athletes - Auburn's Danielle Downey, Arizona's Lorena Ochoa, Georgia's Summer Simons and Pepperdine's Lindsey Wright.

Sophomore Sarah Huarte was Cal's top golfer, tying for 31st with a 296 after carding a final round of 74. This is the best finish and score for a Bear golfer at NCAAs, as in 2001, Vikki Laing paced the Bears by tying for 44th with a 303. Laing turned in Cal's best performance Friday by shooting a 72 for the second-straight day. She ended the tournament in a tie for 45th at 298.

Cal junior Ria Quiazon was steady throughout the tournament, recording a final round of 75 to finish in a tie for 50th at 299. Sophomore Claire Dury and senior Anne Walker struggled Friday, shooting a 79 and 82, respectively. Dury tied for 83rd (305), while Walker tied for 114th (316).

Next season, the Bears return four of their five golfers who competed at this year's NCAA Championships. Walker graduates after helping the Cal program earn a national reputation.
