USC's Rainey Continues Run In NCAA Singles Championship

COLLEGE STATION, Texas -- USC's Nick Rainey continues to make the most of his time in College Station as he recorded another singles victory on Friday, May 24, to advance to the quarterfinals of the 2002 NCAA Division I Singles Championships.

The unseeded Rainey defeated Miami's Todd Widom, 6-3, 6-4, in this afternoon's Round of 16 after already upsetting eighth-seeded Benjamin Becker of Baylor and beating John Chesworth of Furman in the first two rounds. Rainey will face top-seed Matias Boeker of Georgia in the quarterfinal on Saturday, May 25, at 3 p.m. CST.

The Trojans' defeated Georgia, 4-1, for their 16th all-time national championship on Tuesday. In the match, Boeker defeated USC's Andrew Park at No. 1 for the Bulldogs' only point.

Rainey did not have the same success in the doubles tournament on Friday. He and partner Ryan Moore were eliminated today in a 6-3, 6-2 second-round loss to Minnesota's Harsh Mankad and Thomas Haug. USC's No. 1 doubles team completed their final season with a 20-10 overall record.
