WSU Ends Season In 8-2 Loss At Stanford
May 26, 2002
STANFORD, Calif. - Four Stanford pitchers limited Washington State to four hits as the Cardinal captured an 8-2 win over WSU Sunday in a Pacific-10 Conference baseball game at Sunken Diamond.
The Cougars' season ended with three straight losses to the eighth ranked Cardinal. WSU finished the 2002 campaign 21-33 overall and 6-18 in Pacific-10 Conference play.
Cougar starter Bryce Chamberlin (0-2) suffered the loss, allowing eight hits and six runs, but just four earned. He gave way to Zach Fisher in the eighth inning, while Josh Bartlome closed out the game for WSU.
Stanford (40-16, 16-8) starter Tim Cunningham (8-2) picked up the win, with Ryan McCally, Darin Naatjes and J.D. Willcox also seeing mound action for the Cardinal.
The Cardinal scored a single tally in the fourth inning that WSU duplicated in the sixth to earn a 1-1 tie. Bookie Gates scored WSU's first run, stroking a single up the middle with two out in the sixth. Gates then stole second and came home on Robert Stahlke's single to center.
In the seventh, Stanford's Scott Dragicevich blasted a line drive down the left field line that resulted in a two-run home run, giving Stanford a 3-1 lead.
Junior Jeff LaRue provided the Cougars with their last run when he drilled his tenth home run of the season, a pinch-hit shot with one out in the eighth inning that pulled WSU to within one run, 3-2.
Stanford broke the game open in the bottom of the eighth inning, using five hits, a walk, a wild pitch and one crucial Cougar error to score five runs.
Chamberlin allowed Stanford just six hits through the first seven innings, but ran into problems in the eighth inning. The Cardinal started their five-run uprising with two singles and when Brian Hall dropped down a sacrifice bunt, Chamberlin booted the ball, loading the bases. Chris O'Riordan responded with a sacrifice fly to give Stanford a 4-2 lead.
Chamberlin then gave way to Zach Fisher, who uncorked a wild pitch to advance both runners, then intentionally walked Carlos Quentin. Scott Dragicevich then singled home another run. After Andy Topham popped up to Gates at second, Arik VanZandt executed a perfect bunt toward third base for a single that scored Stanford's third run. Chris Carter then doubled home Stanford's final two runs, giving the host club an 8-2 lead.
Josh Bartlome, in relief of Fisher, got the final Stanford out, but the Cougars could not dent the pitching of Naatjes and Willcox in the ninth.
