May 27, 2002
LOS ANGELES -- The USC baseball team will face BYU in the first round as it hosts a four-team NCAA Regional this weekend (May 31-June 2) at Dedeaux Field, the NCAA announced today. The other first-round matchup features Cal State Northridge and Maine. The regional features four teams that won automatic tournament bids from their respective conferences: USC (Pacific-10), Cal State Northridge (Big West), Maine (America East) and BYU (Mountain West).
The top-seeded Trojans (34-22) and the fourth-seeded Cougars (29-29-1) will meet on Friday (May 31) at 3 p.m., followed by the second-seeded Matadors (40-15) and the third-seeded Black Bears (40-15) at 7 p.m. The weekend's complete schedule is listed below.
'We are very happy to be at home,' said USC head coach Mike Gillespie. 'After our recent renovation, we believe Dedeaux Field lends itself well to hosting this prestigious event. It is an outstanding field and it will be a dogfight to see who can advance.'
The winner of this double-elimination tournament will move on to the NCAA Super Regional next weekend (June 7-9) at a site to be determined against the winner of the regional hosted by Stanford for the right to advance to the College World Series.
An all-tournament pass, good for every game, costs $50 for adults and $30 for students and seniors. Single-game tickets on Friday and Saturday are $10 for adults and $7 for students and seniors. Single-game tickets for Sunday (or Monday) are $15 for adults and $10 for students and seniors. All-tournament passes can be purchased by calling (213) 740-GOSC.
