USC WINS PAC-10 CHAMPIONSHIPFour Pac-10 teams invited to play in 56th annual NCAA Tournament

USC wins its second consecutive Pac-10 Championship, posting back-to-back titles for the first time since the 1995-1996 seasons ... For the 10th time, four Pac-10 teams have been invited to the NCAA Tournament ... STANFORD and USC are No. 1 seeds in their regional, while ARIZONA STATE is a No. 2 and WASHINGTON a No. 3 ... The Cardinal, Trojans and Sun Devils were selected as first-round regional host schools ... The Huskies will travel to Houston, Texas to compete in the regional hosted by Rice University.

Head coach Pat Murphy leads his team to the postseason for the fifth time in the last six years and third year in a row. Murphy recently recorded his 300th win as the Sun Devils' skipper. He is 304-162-1 (.652) at ASU ... ASU has advanced to the NCAA Tournament in 26 of the program's 43 varsity seasons (dating back to 1959). The Sun Devils have amassed a 122-49 (.730) postseason record in that time ... Houston received the No. 1 seed in the NCAA regional ASU will host this weekend. ASU is No. 2, while San Diego is No. 3 and New Mexico State No. 4. The Sun Devils have not played Houston or San Diego and posted a 2-1 record against the Aggies this season ... Three Sun Devils were named to the All-Pac-10 team, SO OF Andre Ethier, FR INF Dustin Pedroia and SO 1B Jeremy West. SR C Cesar Castillo, SO RHP Mike Esposito, SR 2B Sergio Garcia, SO CF Steve Garrabrants, FR INF Jeff Larish, JR RHP Jered Liebeck, JR RHP Robbie McClellan, SO RHP Ryan Schroyer and SR OF Jon Sheaffer received honorable mention honors ... West paces the Sun Devils offensively, leading the squad in runs (54), doubles (18), home runs (13), RBI (67), total bases (136) and slugging percentage (.705) ... Esposito leads the Sun Devil staff with a 9-5 record and 93 strikeouts in 96.0 innings pitched. Schroyer boasts ASU's lowest ERA at 2.35 and has the most saves (7) this season. Opponents are hitting just .221 against him ... ASU ranks third in the Pac-10 in batting with a .311 average. The team is second in pitching with a 4.44 team ERA and is tied for second in fielding percentage (.967).

STANFORD (40-16 Overall, 16-8 Pac-10, 2nd Place)
Last Week: Washington State W 10-0, 11-3, 8-2 This Week: Hosting NCAA RegionalStanford has reached the 40-win plateau for the eighth straight season and 16th time during head coach Mark Marquess' 26-year reign. The Cardinal has won 11 of its last 15 games ... Stanford was selected as the No. 8 national seed in the NCAA Tournament and will host Cal State Fullerton, Long Beach State and San Jose State in regional action this weekend. Stanford is making its 23rd NCAA Regional appearance. The Cardinal was 2-1 against Cal State Fullerton this season and split a two-game series with San Jose State. Stanford is 24-4 at Sunken Diamond this year ... Stanford is attempting to qualify for the College World Series for the fourth consecutive season as the 2002 senior class is looking to become the first class of Stanford Baseball players to reach Omaha in each of its four years. Stanford has qualified for the CWS title game in each of the last two years ... JR RHP Jeremy Guthrie was named Pac-10 Pitcher of the Year. Guthrie is 10-1 this season with a 2.52 ERA, best in the Pac-10. He paces the league in strikeouts (115) and opposing batting average (.235) and also ranks among Pac-10 leaders in innings pitched (121.1, 2nd) and wins (10, 2nd). He is one of five finalists for the Golden Spikes Award ... JR UT Jason Cooper, SO OF Sam Fuld, JR C Ryan Garko, SR 2B Chris O'Riordan and SO OF Carlos Quentin were named to the All-Pac-10 team. With six selections (including Guthrie), Stanford placed more players on the all-conference team than any other Pac-10 squad ... The Cardinal leads the Pac-10 in hitting (.325 batting average), pitching (4.10 ERA)and fielding (.971 fielding percentage). Stanford leads the Conference in a total of 13 categories.

USC (34-22 Overall, 17-7 Pac-10, 1st Place)
Last Week: at UCLA W 5-4 (12), 16-10, 13-3 This Week: Hosting NCAA RegionalUSC won the Pac-10 Championship outright with a 17-7 record after last weekend's sweep at UCLA. The Trojans have back-to-back titles for the first time since 1995 and 1996 and their fourth title in eight years ... USC is making its 10th straight NCAA Tournament appearance and hosting a first-round regional for the third time in four years. The double-elimination field includes No. 2 seed and No. 15-ranked Cal State Northridge, No. 3 seed Maine and No. 4 seed Brigham Young ... USC has a 201-72 (.736) overall postseason record. The Trojans have played in 29 league, district or regional tournaments at home and have posted a 65-13 (.833) record in those games. Last season USC went 5-0 at Deadeaux Field in postseason play ... JR C Alberto Concepcion earned the Pac-10 Player of the Year award, while Trojan skipper Mike Gillespie earned his fourth Pac-10 Coach of the Year honor. Concepcion leads USC offensively, hitting .383 with 82 hits, 20 doubles, four triples, 143 total bases and a .482 on-base percentage. He is one of 10 semifinalists for the 2002 Johnny Bench Award. USC has won five Pac-10 titles under Gillespie's reign. He has led the Trojans to playoff spots in 14 of his 16 seasons ... SR CF Brian Barre, FR DH Joey Metropoulos, SR 1B Bill Peavey and JR RHP Anthony Reyes were also named to the All-Pac-10 team ... Barre and FR RHP Brett Bannister were named this season's final Pac-10 Player and Pitcher of the Week after helping USC secure a series sweep at UCLA. Barre hit .467 with two home runs, a double, stolen base and added four runs and two RBI, while Bannister posted two of the three wins against the Bruins. Bannister allowed just one run and seven hits with two walks and 10 K's in the relief appearances ... USC is second in the Pac-10 in batting (.320). Barre leads the league in runs (70) and walks (43), while Peavey leads the Conference in RBI (68).

WASHINGTON (30-25-1 Overall, 15-9 Pac-10, T3rd Place)
Last Week: Arizona W 7-3, 8-3, L 2-5 This Week: NCAA Regional at Houston, Tex.Washington finished the season with 30 wins for the first time since 1999. The Huskies have won 10 of their last 15 games ... Washington returns to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1998, but for the fifth time in the last 11 seasons ... UW heads to Houston, Texas where it will compete in the regional hosted by Rice University. The Huskies are the No. 3 seed, while Rice is No. 1, Texas Tech No. 2 and Harvard No. 4. Washington has only ever faced one of those teams, when the Huskies beat Rice 20-11 in a 1998 NCAA Regional game at Texas A&M ... UW has only traveled to play in the state of Texas three times in its history, and all three of those trips were to College Station ... Washington placed two Huskies on the All-Pac-10 squad with JR RF Tyler Davidson and SR RHP Shawn Kohn earning the honors. SR 3B Michael Done, JR CF Jay Garthwaite, FR C Aaron Hathaway, SO 2B Greg Isaacson, FR 1B Kyle Larsen, JR SS Tila Reynolds and JR RHP Sean White were named honorable mention ... Three Huskies are currently riding hitting streaks of 10 or more games. Larsen is on a 12-game hitting streak, while Done has hit safely in 11 straight games. Davidson is on a 10-game hitting streak ... Washington ranks fifth in the Pac-10 in batting (.307) and pitching (5.41) and fourth in fielding (.965). The Huskies lead the Conference with 93 stolen bases ... Kohn paces the Conference in innings pitched (122.2) and wins (11) and ranks second in ERA (3.15), fourth in opposing batting average (.245) and ninth in strikeouts (72).


ARIZONA (31-24 Overall, 9-15, Pac-10, T-7th Place)
Arizona has reached the 30-win plateau for the fifth time in the past six seasons ... Head coach Andy Lopez finishes his first year at the helm of Wildcat baseball with a winning record, 31-24 (.564) ... As a team the 'Cats rank fourth in the Pac-10 with a 5.24 ERA. They also appear among league leaders in runs (433, 3rd), triples (25, t2nd) and walks (246, 3rd) ... SR SS Brad Hassey was named to the All-Pac-10 team, while SR C Chris Cunningham, SO 2B Moises Duran and FR 3B John Hardy earned honorable mention ... Arizona tied with USC as the teams with the most series sweeps this season. The 'Cats recorded sweeps over the following opponents: New Mexico, Southern Utah, San Diego State, UC Irvine and Cal State Dominguez Hills ... Final Leaders (Offense): batting average, on-base percentage - Hardy (.328, .426); runs, hits, total bases, stolen bases - Hassey (50, 75, 116, 15); doubles, triples, home runs, RBI, total bases, slugging percentage - Cunningham (13, 4, 13, 53, 116, .566). CALIFORNIA (29-26 Overall, 11-13 Pac-10, 5th Place)
The Golden Bears close out the 2002 season at 29-27 (.518), with an 11-13 Conference record ... SO 1B Conor Jackson is one of four Pac-10 semifinalists for the Dick Howser Trophy and has been invited to the USA Baseball Team trials. Jackson finished the season leading the Bears in nearly every offensive statistical category. He also had Cal's longest hitting streak at 15 games from Feb. 1-24 ... JR C John Baker is one of 10 seminfialists for the Johnny Bench Award. Baker has a .993 fielding percentage and just two errors in 45 games this season ... Both Jackson and Baker were named to the All-Pac-10 team, while SO RHP Matt Brown, SR RHP Trevor Hutchinson, FR OF David Nicholson and SR 2B Carson White earned honorable mention ... Final Leaders (Offense): batting average, fielding percentage - Baker (.383, .993); runs - Nicholson (46); hits, doubles, home runs, RBI, slugging percentage - Jackson (84, 16, 16, 61, .691); triples - Jackson, Jeff Dragicevich, David Weiner (2); stolen bases - Nicholson (10). Final Leaders (Pitching): wins , innings pitched, strikeouts - Hutchinson (7, 117.0, 94); saves - Brown (6); opposing batting average - Matt Payne (.220).

OREGON STATE (31-23, 10-14, 6th Place)
Oregon State notched at least 30 wins for the fifth time in the past seven seasons. The Beavers finished the season with a near identical record from last year, minus one loss. Last season OSU finished 31-24, 11-13 ... OSU set a pair of team school records this season in triples (27) and saves (14) ... JR 3B Brian Barden set career records, becoming OSU's all-time hits (231) and total bases (355) leader. He was OSU's only selection to the All-Pac-10 team, while JR SS Will Hudson, JR 1B Andy Jarvis, JR RHP Ty Kline, FR CF Aaron Mathews, SO LF Seth Pietsch and SO RHP Jared Sanders earned honorable mention ... Pietsch and Sanders also set school single-season records, as Pietsch had 24 doubles this season and Sanders had nine saves ... Final Leaders (Offense): batting average, hits, RBI, total bases - Barden (.349, 81, 50, 125); runs, doubles, triples, slugging percentage - Pietsch (51, 24, 6, .600); home runs - Jarvis (11); on-base percentage - Wick Udy (.440). Final Leaders (Pitching): ERA, saves, opposing batting average - Sanders (3.23, 9, .252); wins - Kline (6); strikeouts - Mark McLemore (48); innings pitched - Stephen Copeland (96.2); complete games - Ben Rowe (2).

UCLA (26-34 Overall, 9-15 Pac-10, t7th Place)
UCLA finished this season with the same Pac-10 record it posted a year ago. The Bruins also finished seventh in last year's standings ... LHP/1B Wes Whisler was named Pac-10 Freshman of the Year. The frosh hit .328 with a league-leading 18 home runs. He broke the UCLA freshman home run record ... SR OF Adam Berry is one of the semifinalists for the Dick Howser Trophy given to the top player in college baseball ... Head coach Gary Adams picked up his 900th win as the Bruins' skipper this season. He has a 922-761-7 (.548) at UCLA ... Final Leaders (Offense): batting average, stolen bases - Ben Francisco (.368, 20); runs, hits, triples, stolen bases - Ryan Rasmussen (52, 70, 2, 20); hits, doubles, on-base percentage - Josh Arhart (70, 18, .427); home runs, slugging percentage - Whisler (18, .684); home runs, RBI, total bases - Berry (18, 50, 127). Final Leaders (Pitching): ERA, strikeouts - Whisler (4.06, 59); wins, innings pitched - Mike Kunes (7, 89.0); saves, opposing batting average - Billy Susdorf (3, .233); saves - Doug Silva, Kyle Wilson (3).

WASHINGTON STATE (21-33 Overall, 6-18 Pac-10, 9th Place)
Washington State improved on last season's 15-39 overall record, but finished with the same Conference mark from a year ago. The Cougars' 21 wins are the most since the Pac-10 began full league play in 2000 ... WSU posted a 15-10 (.600) record against non-conference foes ... WSU was the fourth best hitting club in the Pac-10 with a .308 batting average ... SR 2B Bookie Gates was named to the All-Pac-10 team. JR RHP Eddie Bonine, FR SS Derek Bruce, SO OF Justin Hart, SR LF Evan Hecker, JR RHP Brandon Hundt and JR INF Jeff LaRue received honorable mention honors ... Final Leaders (Offense): batting average, on-base percentage - Hart (.370, .442); runs, doubles - Hecker (47, 19); hits, RBI, total bases, slugging percentage - LaRue (73, 40, 119, .598); triples, stolen bases - Gates (3, 14); triples, home runs - Bruce (3, 11). Final Leaders (Pitching): ERA, opposing batting average - Billy Gorrell (5.40, .234); wins, complete games, innings pitched, strikeouts - Bonine (8, 3, 104.2, 78); saves - Hundt, Zach Fisher (3).
