Franey Earns Pac-10 Postgraduate Scholarship, Neufeld Award

May 30, 2002

BERKELEY - Senior guard Janet Franey added a couple more academic awards to her long list at the May 15 annual Honors Luncheon.

The La Mesa, Calif., product was one of four graduating Cal student-athletes to earn a $3000 Pac-10 Conference Post-Graduate Scholarship. The others selected were Alice Henriques (women's swimming), Scott Frandsen (men's crew) and Jacob Wetzel (men's crew).

Franey also was honored as a Neufeld Scholar-Athlete. The achievement awards are given to the graduating student-athletes, one man and one woman, with the highest cumulative GPA. This year, there was a tie on both accounts. On the women's side, Franey and field hockey's Sara Hunt both have 3.75 GPAs. For the men, John Collin (cross country) and Matt Blair (track & field) each have a 3.60 GPA.

A member of Phi Beta Kappa, Franey graduated earlier this month with a double major in English and history. She will attend law school in the fall.
