May 31, 2002

BATON ROUGE, La. -- Washington State's Anson Henry advanced to the 100m dash finals and Anna Blue finished 15th in the women's 5000m Friday in the third day's events at the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships being held at Bernie Moore Stadium at Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

Henry, a senior from Pickering, Ontario, Canada, finished third in the first heat of the 100m dash semifinals with a time of 10.25 seconds, just slightly slower than his Thursday preliminary heat time of 10.23. Justin Gatlin, a sophomore from the University of Tennessee, lowered his prelim-leading time of 10.15 to 10.05 for the best time in the semifinals. Dion Crabbe, a senior from Mississippi State, out-leaned Henry at the line to finish with the second-best time, 10.24. Eight sprinters advance to the Saturday final. Henry will receive All-America honors for his performance and the only team points for the Cougar men when he finishes the race.

Blue, a junior from Olympia, Wash., finished 15th out of the field of 18 runners in the women's 5000m with a time of 16 minutes, 51.59 seconds. Blue's personal best time in the 5k race is 16:27.76, run this season at the Stanford Invitational. Stanford's Lauren Fleshman, the 2002 Pac-10 champion in this event, won the NCAA title with a time of 15:53.91.

A thunderstorm with scattered rain showers and lightening put Friday evening's competition about 30 minutes behind schedule.

At the end of Friday's events, the WSU women's 16 points, provided by the second place finishes of Whitney Evans (high jump) and Ellannee Richardson (heptathlon), put the Cougars in a three-way tie for fifth place in women's team standings. UCLA leads the women's standings with 44 points while host LSU leads the men's scoring with 29 points.

In addition to Henry's 100m dash final, senior Cicely Clinkenbeard (Okanogan, Wash.) will compete Saturday in the triple jump trials and final.
