June 8, 2002
PALO ALTO, Calif. - Third baseman Scott Dragicevich went 4-for-4, including a go-ahead two-run single in the sixth Saturday, as the Stanford Cardinal defeated the USC Trojans, 5-3, to win the NCAA Super Regional at Sunken Diamond. The Cardinal scored four runs, all unearned, on a two-out rally in the sixth.
Stanford improved to 45-16 overall, becoming the first team to advance to the 2002 College World Series. USC ends its season with a 37-24 record.
The Trojans scored first with a run in the second on walks to first baseman Bill Peavey and shortstop Michael Moon. Right fielder David Gordon was hit by a pitch to load the bases and left fielder Michael Morales scored Peavey on a sacrifice fly to center on an 0-2 pitch by Stanford starter Tim Cunningham.
Stanford right fielder Carlos Quentin tied the game in the fourth with an RBI double down the left field line, scoring designated hitter Jason Cooper.
Third baseman Jon Brewster led off the fifth with a triple to center. Anthony Lunetta walked and senior center fielder Brian Barre singled to right, plating Brewster. Junior catcher Alberto Concepcion then grounded into a double play that ended the threat.
With two outs in the sixth, Ryan Garko hit a ground ball down the third base line for a base hit and advanced to second on a throwing error by Brewster. On the next play, Cooper hit a chopper that Peavey mishandled at first. Quentin walked to load the bases before Dragicevich hit a 3-1 pitch to center that gave Stanford a 3-2 lead and started the rally.
Cory Campos took the loss for USC despite another strong postseason effort, going 6 1/3 innings and allowing five runs (one earned) on eight hits with two walks and five strikeouts. Tim Cunningham (10-2) registered the victory for Stanford while Dan Rich recorded his second save in as many days.
The Trojans finished the season with a 25-11 streak and the Pac-10 Conference championship with a 17-7 record after starting the season with a 12-13 mark.
