Rowers Earn Academic, Athletic Honors
June 11, 2002
Seattle - Five women from Washington's national champion varsity eight-oared crew have been honored by the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) for their accomplishments on the water and in the classroom.
Senior Anna Mickelson, who rows in the six seat in the varsity eight, was honored as a CRCA National Scholar-Athlete for the third year in a row. She carries a 3.63 grade point average in communications. Joining her as academic all-America honoree is junior Lauren Estevenin, who stroked the varsity eight to its second consecutive NCAA title. Estevenin has a 3.50 gpa as an art major.
The National Scholar-Athlete award recognizes academic accomplishments of women who have a 3.5 or higher grade point average and who have competed in the varsity boat for the current season.
Mickelson and teammate Heidi Hurn, a junior who rows in the five seat, and senior coxswain Mary Whipple were named to the All-West Region First Team after leading the Huskies to an 11th straight Pac-10 Conference crown and fourth NCAA varsity eight title in the last six years. All three will now move to the national ballot for all-America honors that will be announced later this month. Mickelson and Whipple, both three-year varsity eight competitors, earned national all-America honors as juniors last year.
Annabel Ritchie, a senior in the seven seat and two-time NCAA champion, was named to the All-West Region Second Team.
