June 12, 2002
Stanford, Calif. - After two seasons with the Stanford women's volleyball team, assistant coach and former Cardinal player Kim Oden has resigned to take a head coaching job at St. Francis High School in Mountain View, California where she will serve as the head girls volleyball coach and also as a school guidance counselor.
'I am very excited about the new direction in my life,' said Oden. 'I'm looking forward to the opportunity to learn about the counseling profession and the challenge of high school athletics.
'It was a very difficult choice to leave the Stanford environment,' she continued. 'I love the university, the athletic department and the volleyball program. I will particularly miss working with the talented and intelligent young women who year after year participate in Cardinal volleyball.
Oden, who graduated from Stanford in 1986 with a degree in Public Policy, was a three-time All-American during her time on The Farm. She was honored as the National Player of the Year in 1984 and '85 and won the Honda/Broderick Award in '85. Oden was a four-time all-conference selection as well as Pac-10 Player of the Year in 1983, '84 and '85. She excelled in the classroom as well, earning Academic All-America honors in 1984. In 1990, she was named Player of the Decade on the AVCA's All-Decade Team (1980's). She holds the Cardinal single-match record for most blocks (16) and is ranked among the top five in several other career and single-season categories.
After graduation, Oden went on to play on the U.S. National Team (1986-92, '94) and was named Olympic team captain in 1988 and 1992. At the 1988 Seoul Summer Olympics, Oden was voted 'Best Hitter,' tallying the highest hitting percentage during the games. In '92, she helped the U.S. women to a bronze medal at the Barcelona Summer Olympics in Spain.
Oden, a California native, played indoor professional volleyball in Italy (1992), China (1993), Brazil (1994) and Turkey (1995) as well.
She also played professional beach volleyball in the National Four-Women Pro-Beach Tour during the summers of 1993 through 1997. Oden was voted MVP of the beach tour in 1995.
She has held assistant coaching positions at North Carolina, Duke and, most recently, Iowa State before joining the Cardinal staff.
