The U.S. Junior Championships will also be held concurrently at Stanford, and Duck freshmen Katie McKeever and Elisa Crumley are eligible to compete in the discus (169-9) and javelin (169-7), respectively, although Crumley declined invites for both meets to rest her shoulder.

Competing athletes for the 30th edition of the national junior championships are aged 14-19 (and must not turn 20 in 2002). The top two finishers in each event will be eligible for the World Junior Championships (7/16-21 in Kingston, Jamaica), and team selection is at the discretion of USATF and its committees.
