Texas Express' Julie Pickler and Team Idaho's Donovan Kilmartin held on to their first-day leads to win the USA Junior Combined Event National Championships Wednesday at Edwards Stadium.

But the victory for Pickler in the heptathlon wasn't as easy as for Kilmartin in the decathlon. Julie was tied with her twin-sister Diana heading into the final event - the 800m - with 4538 points. But, Julie, who was third a year ago at this event and had never beaten her sister before today, won the 800m in 2:21.71 (800 points) to finish with a PR of 5338 points. Julie also tied Diana today for the best mark in the long jump at 18-7.25.

Diana, the 2001 USA heptathlon champion, was fourth in the 800m (2:26.03, 743) and took second place with 5281. Vanderbilt's Jose Hahn held down the third spot with 5259. Both Picklers have qualified for the World Junior Championships July 16-21 in Kingston, Jamaica.

Meanwhile, Kilmartin cruised to an easy victory in the junior decathlon with a PR of 7440 points and will also compete at the World Junior Championships. His score is the top one ever by an American junior utilizing the new junior implements which were introduced this year. Overall, Kilmartin won five events - the 100m, the long jump and the high jump yesterday and the discus (129-11, 657) and pole vault (15-9, 849) today.

USC's Robert Bates was 748 off the pace with 6692 points, and South Carolina's Greg Royster was third with 6679. Bates started the day strong with a victory in the 110mH (15.00). Royster tied Kilmartin for top honors in the pole vault. Texas Express' Jordan Mumford finished fourth overall with 6562 points after winning the final event, the 1500m (4:32.98).
