WSU No. 15 In Street & Smith's

July 1, 2002

PULLMAN, Wash. --- Just a year after being picked to finish last in the Pac-10 by many preseason publications, Washington State has appeared in another college football annuals' top 25.

Street & Smith's picked the Cougars No. 15 nationally, and included offensive guard Derrick Roche among its list of first team All-Americans. Like many other college football forecasters, the magazine is predicting the conference crown to come down to Northwest rivals, Oregon, Washington, and WSU.

'There's no clear-cut favorite, although the upper hand could well remain in the Pacific Northwest, where Oregon, Washington, and Washington State look like strong championship contenders,' wrote Dwight Chapin.

Quarterback Jason Gesser, who threw for 3,010 yards and 26 touchdowns as a junior, earned high praise from Street & Smith's, including first team All-Pac-10, the conference's best player under pressure, best passing quarterback, and best option quarterback.

Gesser is also included in the magazine's honorable mention All-America picks, along with junior kicker Drew Dunning.

Washington State's season begins Aug. 31 in Seattle against Nevada.
