Bown, Tom Guide U.S. Women to Sweep of Italy

West Valley City, Utah - Heather Bown scored 12 points and Logan Tomadded 11 as the U.S. women's national volleyball team swept Italy, 25-18,25-15, 25-23, Tuesday night at The E-Center.
The match was the third of a four-match series between the two teams heldin conjunction with the USA Girls Junior Olympic VolleyballChampionships. The United States won the first match, 25-18, 25-21, 25-16, while Italy took the second meeting, 25-16, 16-25, 25-21, 25-18.
Bown had match-highs in blocks (four) and service aces (three) to goalong with five kills for Team USA. Tom, who grew up in nearby Salt LakeCity, blasted a match-high 10 kills with one ace and a hitting percentageof .346.
'I think we played much better tonight in a lot of areas,' said outsidehitter Nancy Metcalf, who scored two points. 'Our passing was very good,which made it easier on the setters and hitters. Also, our blocking anddefense really picked up. The team knew what had to happen to besuccessful, and everybody came together to make that happen.'
Keba Phipps chipped in with eight points on six kills and two blocks,while Tayyiba Haneef added five points on four kills and one block in thewin.
'I thought the team played very well tonight,' said middle blocker WizBachman, who scored six points. 'Everyone was able to play tonight makingit a complete team effort in the win. Earlier in practice (head coach)Toshi (Yoshida) had us focusing on picking up Italy's tip. The startingsix established that early on in the first game and that helped set therhythm for the rest of the match.'
Elisa Galastri led Italy with 12 points (nine kills, three blocks), whilePaola Paggi posted 10 points on nine kills and one block.
The final match of the series will be Thursday night at the South TowneExposition Center in Sandy, Utah, at 7 p.m. (MDT).
