July 4, 2002
Redwood Shores, Calif. - Stanford University Crew and Sailing teams are set to begin a new era in the Stanford Rowing and Sailing Center. The 16,500 square foot facility is set for completion in January 2003.
'It is our goal to access these waters to our community and youth through the Stanford junior rowing and sailing teams, adult programs, and all invite evening rows.'
Director of Crew Craig Amerkhanian
Assistant Athletic Director of Capital Planning and Project Manager Dave Schinski stated: 'the quality of construction and material will no doubt establish this facility as both functional and effective in design and use. From its heavy gauge copper roof to the split face stone walls, the building will be home to generations of Stanford student athletes.'
'The Rowing and Sailing Center will serve our University and community,' said Director of Rowing Craig Amerkhanian. 'Our athletes and alumni are indeed very excited as we embark on this new chapter of these storied programs.'
Located at the Port of the Redwood City, the Boathouse will face the Bair Island Wildlife Reserve. Five boatbays will be the home of Stanford Sailing, Open Women, Lightweight Women, Men, and the Stanford Rowing Club. 'It is our goal to access these waters to our community and youth through the Stanford junior rowing and sailing teams, adult programs, and all invite evening rows.' said Amerkhanian. Of course, Amerkhanian added: 'Our basic purpose is to extend the Stanford 'Home of Champions' motto to this facility through the accomplishments of the student athletes who train here.'
Associate Athletics Director and Crew/Sailing Administrator Ray Purpur added, 'The Stanford Rowing and Sailing Center will be a state of the art facility that will be home to all who are passionate about winning.'
To recognize those generous supporters of rowing and sailing, a celebration on the building site will occur during the University-wide Alumni Weekend October 19 at 10 am. The Stanford Rowing and Sailing Center is located at 1 Cardinal Way, Redwood City, California.
