Briggs, Farmer Earn <i>Football News</i> Preseason Accolades

TUCSON, Ariz. - A pair of University of Arizona football players were recognized by Football News, as the publication named Lance Briggs and Clarence Farmer to its preseason All-America teams.

Briggs, a 6-foot-2, 243-pound senior from Sacramento, Calif., was a first-team selection at linebacker. He tallied a tam-leading 93 tackles (59 solo) last season in earning first team all-Pacific-10 Conference honors for the second straight season. Briggs was Arizona's Most Valuable Defensive Player in 2001. He has 206 tackles in 22 career games at linebacker, an average of 9.4 stops per game, and has 25 tackles for loss. Briggs has been included on the 2002 Lombardi and Butkus Award watch lists. He is one of four Pac-10 players to appear on the first team.

Farmer, a 6-foot-1, 211-pound junior from Houston, Texas, was named to the third team as a running back. He was the Pac-10's rushing leader with 1,229 yards gained, which ranked 21st nationally, and averaged 5.9 yards per carry in 2001. Farmer tallied 10 touchdowns in 11 games last season and his 111.7 yards per game average was second-best in the conference. Farmer has nine career 100-yard games to his credit, including six in 2001. He was named team MVP and Most Valuable Offensive Player in 2001.

Both players were also included on Football News' preseason all-Pac-10 team.

Arizona opens the 2002 season on Saturday, Aug. 31, against Northern Arizona. Kick-off in Arizona Stadium is scheduled for 7 p.m. PDT.
