Women Of Troy Ranked No. 3 in Volleyball Magazine Preseason Poll

July 17, 2002

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - With the strength and experience of five returning starters and seven returning letterwinners, the USC women's volleyball team is ranked No. 3 in the Volleyball magazine 2002 preseason poll.

The Women of Troy, who were expected to advance to the Final Four last season but fell victim to Arizona in the NCAA Elite Eight after starting outside hitter April Ross (Newport Beach, Calif.) went down with an injury, have a lot to prove in 2002. In addition to Ross, who earned All-Pac-10 first team and Volleyball magazine All-American honorable mention accolades last year, the team will also be led by returning starter middle blocker Katie Olsovsky (Torrance, Calif.), who was a 2001 Volleyball Magazine All-American third team selection and All-Pac-10 first team pick.

Also among the starters returning are sophomore outside hitters Alicia Robinson (Phoenix, Ariz.) and Keao Burdine (La Habra, Calif.) and setters Toni Anderson (Yorba Linda, Calif.) and Tracy Lindquist (Fountain Valley, Calif.).

The Trojans finished the 2001 season with a 25-4 overall record, a 16-2 mark in the Pac-10 and a No. 5 final AVCA ranking.

USC opens its 2002 schedule on the road at the Ball State Nike Classic (Aug. 31-Sept. 2) and BYU Tournament (Sept. 5-6), before its first home match on Friday, Sept. 13, at 6 p.m. against the Cardinal & Gold Alumni. According to the early poll, the Trojans will face five top-10 opponents (No. 1 Stanford, No. 4 Nebraska, No. 5 Florida, No. 6 Pepperdine, No. 8 Arizona) this season.
