Monique Henderson Wins 400m Semi, Advances To Finals At World Junior Track & Field Championships

At Wednesday's (July 17) 2002 World Junior Track & Field Championships in Kingston, Jamaica, UCLA freshman Monique Henderson won her 400m semi-final race and advances to Thursday's final (July 18).

Running in heat two, Henderson's winning mark of 52.31 was the fastest time of the day. On Tuesday (July 16), Henderson, from San Diego Morse HS, again had the fastest time, winning her preliminary race in 52.81.

Sanya Richards, who will be a freshman at Texas this fall, won the other 400m semi-final in 52.72. At the 2002 USA Juniors (June 21-23, Palo Alto), Richards defeated Henderson in the women's 400m. Richards' winning mark of 50.69 (Henderson was second, 51.52) broke Henderson's U. S. Junior 400m record of 50.74, set in 2000.

Looking ahead, Henderson will also run on the U. S. 4 X 400m relay (semi-final, Saturday, July 20; final, Sunday, July 21).

UCLA's final women's competitor at the 2002 World Juniors is freshman Briona Reynolds (Fargo, ND/Red River HS). She will compete in the shot put (qualifying, Friday, July 19; final, Saturday, July 20). At the 2002 U. S. Juniors, Reynolds was second in the shot put (54-2, tied personal-best) and third in the discus (164-11).

On Tuesday (July 16), Bruin redshirt freshman Jeremy Silverman (Annville, PA/Annville-Cleona HS) finished 12th in the men's shot put (60-3.75).
