Arizona's Shields Eighth In Discus At World Junior Track & Field Championships

Two days after finishing second in the shot put at the 2002 IAAF/Coca-ColaOutdoor World Junior Track and Field Championships, Arizona sophomore-to-beSean Shields placed eighth in the discus at the meet Thursday.

Shields threw the discus 194-feet, 3-inches (59.21m) on his third attemptof the meet, good enough for eighth place.

China's Tao Wu won the discus with a World Juniors Record throw of 211-9(64.51m) with the 6-kilogram discus.

Shields completed his freshman year as one of the most accomplishedfreshman throwers in Arizona history. He was the top collegiate freshman inthe shot put and won the U.S. Junior Championship in that event afterfinishing ninth in it at the NCAA Championships.
