USA Softball Goes 5-0 In Pool Play At Canada Cup

Surrey, B.C., Canada - The USA Softball World Team completed pool play with a perfect 5-0 mark after demolishing the Philippines 13-0 in three innings early this morning at the Canada Cup. Stanford's Jessica Mendoza went 1-for-3 at the plate with a run scored and an RBI in the victory.

USA scored five runs in the first inning, three on a home run by Stacey Nuveman (La Verne, Calif.) and two on a round tripper by Nina Lindenberg (Anaheim Hills, Calif.).

The World Team added eight runs in the second inning, highlighted by a three run home run by Teri Goldberg (Fort Collins, Colo.).

Goldberg, Nuveman and Lindenberg each posted three RBIs apiece in the game.

USA pitcher Lisa Fernandez (Long Beach, Calif.) allowed only one hit in the game, a lead-off double in the first inning. She struck out four of the 10 batters she faced and improved her tournament record to 1-0.

USA begins championship bracket play today at 6 p.m. (CDT) against the winner of the Iowa Dynasty-Chinese Taipei game.
