July 22, 2002
The Cal men's and women's crews will seven have returning athletes racing at the 2002 World Under 23 Regatta July 25-28 in Genoa, Italy.
Representing the United States in the women's four will be seniors Ariana Canova and Shelle Orem. In addition to the rowers, Cal women's head coach Dave O'Neill serves as a member of the U.S. coaching staff.
'I am really excited for the Shelle and Ariana,' said O'Neill. 'Both of them are still relatively new to the sport, so this should be a terrific experience for them. They have done a great job this summer. I had a chance to work with the group for a couple of weeks in Ithaca, New York, so I am happy to be back with them for the final preparation and the racing.'
The other Cal women's crew competitor is junior Martha Helgeland who is racing for Norway in the women's double.
On the men's side, seniors Mladen Stegic and Filip Filipic along with junior Ivan Smiljanic are expected to race in the Yugoslavian four. Junior Padraic Hussey is slated for the Irish single, while redshirt junior Neil Armour teams with recent graduate Scott Frandsen in the Canadian eight.
