Bruins Help Make Pro Beach Volleyball History

July 29, 2002

Los Angeles -For the first time in the history of U.S. professional beach volleyball, both a men's and women's team obtained gold on the same day at two different sites. Even more impressive is the fact that all four players are former UCLA standouts.

On Sunday, former Bruin stars Holly McPeak (1990) and Elaine Youngs (1988-89, 1991-92), won the Greek Open in Rhodes, Greece. The duo defeated Natalie Cook and Kerri Pottharst 21-17 and 21-16.

Also on Sunday, former UCLA players Stein Metzger (1993-96) and Kevin Wong (1992-95) achieved gold at the Portugal Open in Espinho, Portugal. Metzger and Wong defeated Marcio Araujo and Benjamin Insfran 17-21, 24-22, 15-12, making for a big day in U.S. pro beach volleyball history.

With her win on Sunday, McPeak stands with 63 career victories, just four behind the all-time leader Karolyn Kirby.
