Aug. 6, 2002

Corvallis, Ore. - The Oregon State University men's basketball team is in the midst of preparing for a six-game Australian tour, which begins with the squad's departure Tues., Aug. 13 from Portland.

The team concluded its third practice Tuesday of five scheduled in the Corvallis vicinity, before starting the first leg of its journey Mon., Aug. 12 with a practice at the Nike Campus in Beaverton. The Beavers will then fly to Honolulu Tuesday, with practices scheduled at the University of Hawaii Aug. 14 and 15. First-year head coach Jay John and the rest of the team will then continue on to Sydney, Australia early Aug. 16.

'The competition is going to be very good on this tour,' John said. 'We will compete against some very experienced professionals, including several former major college players. The bottom line is if we execute what we are trying to accomplish, then I could really care less about the outcome.'

The first game of the tour will be played Sat., Aug. 17 (U.S.) at 10 p.m. PDT at the Niagra Arena in Sydney against the hometown Kings. Game two is scheduled for 2:30 a.m. PDT Mon., Aug. 19 at the Tuggeranong Basketball Stadium in Canberra against the Cannons.

The third game of the tour is also scheduled in Canberra against the Australia Institute of Sport with tipoff time at 12:00 a.m. Aug. 20. The team will then fly to Brisbane for a game against the Bullets Aug. 22 at 2:30 a.m. PDT from the Aukenflower Arena. The final two contests will be played in the East Coast City of Cairns, beginning Fri., Aug. 23 at 2:30 a.m. PDT against the Kuiyam Pride at the Marlin Coast Recreation Center. The final game will be played at 12:00 a.m. Sun., Aug. 25 against the Cairns Taipans at the Cairns Basketball Complex.

'The most important part of this trip is developing a player-coach relationship on the floor,' John explained. 'We need to develop expectations on how we want to play, and change some habits that the players have developed over the years. I'm not sure how much impact this trip is going to have on this team, that is something we'll look at in April and be able to summarize.'

The team will return to the Oregon State campus the evening of Wed., Aug. 28. The roster will include 2002-2003 seniors Mike Cokley, Jimmie Haywood, Brian Jackson, and Philip Ricci, junior Jarman Sample, and sophomores Derek Potter, David Lucas, J.S. Nash, Floyd North III, and Vic Remmers. Undergraduate assistant coach Adam Masten is also eligible to compete. Incoming freshmen Kevin Field, Justin Holt, and Lamar Hurd are ineligible for the tour.
