Mike Barth's Four Field Goals Highlight Camp Tontozona Scrimmage

CAMP TONTOZONA, Ariz. -- Four field goals from senior place kicker Mike Barth, including a pair of 55-yarders, highlighted the annual Arizona State Football scrimmage at Camp Tontozona Sunday morning in front of nearly 1,000 fans.

Barth, a senior from Phoenix (Mountain Pointe) who was 9-for-14 last year and is a combined 26-for-39 in his career, also hit on a pair of 42-yarders with ease.

The wide receiver corps of Daryl Lightfoot, Justin Taplin, Skyler Fulton, Shaun McDonald and Derek Hagan combined to score four of the six touchdowns to lead the offense. Sophomore wideout Lightfoot (Pheonix/Maryvale) hauled in three receptions for 54 yards, including a 30-yard strike for a touchdown. Fulton, a junior from Olympia, Wash., had two receptions for 42 yards and a 15-yard TD. McDonald, ASU's leading returning receiver, had one catch for 32 yards. Hagan, a true freshman from Palmdale, Calif., had two catches for 41 yards, including a 36-yard TD. Taplin, a senior out of Tempe High School, also had a 30-yard TD reception.

Redshirt freshman quarterback Chad Christensen (Scottsdale/Desert Mountain) was 6-for-14 passing for 103 yards, two interceptions and two touchdowns. Sophomore Andrew Walter (Grand Junction, Colo.) was 7-for-17 for 61 yards and junior college transfer Andy Goodenough (Palomar JC) was 2-for-6 with two touchdowns (66 yards).

Redshirt freshman tailback Hakim Hill (Iowa City, Iowa) was ASU's leading rusher, rattling off 28 yards on six carries (4.7 avg.). Freshman tailback Randy Hill (Tempe/McClintock) had a three-yard TD in a red-zone drill, and also ran back a 80-yard fumble on a botched play for a touchdown late in the scrimmage.

The defense was led by a depleted secondary that resulted in three interceptions. Redshirt freshman Joey Smith (Phoenix/South Mountain), who was named the scout team defensive MVP last year, had an interception he nearly returned for a touchdown. True freshman Mike Davis Jr., the son of former NFL standout Mike Davis (Oakland/Los Angeles Raiders) also had an interception in the scrimmage. Freshman J.W. Lucas (Phoenix/Cactus) also picked of a pass. Preseason All-American defensive end Terrell Suggs (Chandler/Hamilton) had several tackles at or behind the line of scrimmage and knocked down two balls.

The Sun Devils will continue their workouts at Camp Tontozona through Wednesday morning before returning for practices in Tempe on Thursday (August 15). ASU opens the 2002 campaign August 24 at No. 10 Nebraska in the BCA Classic in Lincoln, Neb.
